Plastic Spew

This is where I comment on the insane amount of plastic that will soon devour us. Even our friendly, organic produce companies encase their produce in a plastic thing called a clam shell. I like my clam shells living in the ocean.

Off topic for a day. I love Thanksgiving. I love the whole day. Preparing a huge meal for family and friends. It’s one of the nicest holidays. To sit down with one another, eat and give thanks.

On Saturday after the feast we will head up to my parent’s cabin, find our Christmas tree, drink hot cocoa and keep an eye open for elk.

During our hike into the woods, thanks will issue from me with every breath I exhale. On a cold day in November I can watch it swirl into the cosmos.

Organic produce. Good for you, good for the environment. So why do they put it in a plastic clamshell? This defeats the purpose of being green. Same can be said for sticking the produce you buy into all those individual plastic bags.

(Reusablebags.com sells produce bags if you need one.)
I just put all of my produce in my shopping cart and then on to the conveyor belt and then into my “reusable” bag. Everyone has touched it, the migrant worker who harvested it, the store clerk who put it out on the shelf, me, my kids, the checker, the bagger. I always wash my produce before I eat it anyway, a plastic bag seemed sort of silly once I started thinking about who had already handled it.

Organic produce, especially our stores’ greens, tend to have a bunch of little green bugs. We had a little lizard, held captive by the boys for a few days in a fish tank. We found a lot of little green bugs for him to eat in our organic lettuce. I finally convinced the kids to let him go. I was beginning to stress about being able to find him fresh bugs this winter, and, I thought he should find a nice rock wall to hibernate under.

On my daily sojourn to Safeway, I was recently confronted by hundreds and hundreds of orange and purple and red plastic 2-liter soda bottles. So pretty, a rainbow of 83¢ bottles of high fructose corn syrup and food coloring. Just looking at it made my teeth feel fuzzy. People still buy this crap?
